TOE UP SOCKS
By Sara Baldwin ©2004
SIZE: Women’s medium, about shoe size 6-9
FINISHED FOOT LENGTH: 9 ½ inches (adjustable)
FINISHED FOOT CIRCUMFERENCE: 8 inches
MATERIALS: Double pointed knitting needles size 0; fingering or sock weight yarn, 3.5 ounces (100 grams),
yarn needle. Photo shows Plymouth Sockotta yarn, color 507.
GAUGE: 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch.
TOE: With Figure-8 cast-on, place 12 stitches on each of two needles (24 total). Knit one round. Tighten up
the cast-on by pulling the stitches one at a time, ending with the stitch that leads to the yarn tail. (For the
following rounds, switch to three or four needles as it becomes comfortable).
Round 2: K 2, M1, k 8, M1, k 4, M1, k 8, M1, k2.
Round 3 and all odd-numbered rounds: Knit around.
Round 4: K 2, M1, k 10, M1, k 4, M1, k 10, M1, k2.
Round 6: K 2, M1, k 12, M1, k 4, M1, k 12, M1, k2.
Round 8: K 2, M1, k 14, M1, k 4, M1, k 14, M1, k2.

Round 14: K 2, M1, k 20, M1, k 4, M1, k 20, M1, k2.
Round 16: K 2, M1, k 22, M1, k 4, M1, k 22, M1, k2.
Round 18: K 2, M1, k 24, M1, k 4, M1, k 24, M1, k2.
Round 20: K 2, M1, k 26, M1, k 4, M1, k 26, M1, k2 (64 stitches).
FOOT: Knit around even in stockinette stitch until the foot is 6 inches long, or desired length (about 3 ½
inches less than desired total finished length).
GUSSET INCREASES: At this point it is most convenient to arrange your needles so that 32 stitches are on
one needle across the top of the foot, and there are 16 on each of two needles across the bottom of the foot.
The beginning of the round is at the join between the two needles with 16 stitches.
Increase round: First needle: k 16. Second needle: M1, k32, M1. Third needle: k 16.
Next round: knit around even (34 stitches).
Repeat these two rounds until there are 50 stitches on the second needle, or 82 total. At this point you will be
working across needles one and three only. If you have short sock needles, you may find it more convenient
to slip the 50 needle two stitches onto a stitch holder (or just run a piece of scrap yarn through them).
HOURGLASS HEEL- decrease rows:
Row 1: (needle 1) knit 15, wrap next stitch as follows: bring the yarn forward, slip the next stitch from the left
to the right needle, take the yarn to the back, turn, and slip the last stitch from the left to the right needle
(ready to purl).
Row 2: Purl 30 (across needles 1 and 3), wrap the next stitch as follows: take the yarn to the back, slip the next
stitch from the left to the right needle, bring the yarn forward, turn, slip the next stitch from the left to the
right needle (ready to knit).
Row 3: Knit 29 (across needles 1 and 3), wrap the next stitch, turn.
Row 4: Purl 28, wrap the next stitch, turn.
Row 5: Knit 27, wrap the next stitch, turn (3 stitches wrapped)
Row 6: Purl 26, wrap the next stitch, turn (3 stitches wrapped).
Continue in the manner above until you have 10 central unwrapped stitches, 11 stitches wrapped on each side,
and are ready to start a RS (knit) row.
Increase rows:
Row 1: Knit 10, lift front (RS) of wrap onto needle, knit the wrap together with the same stitch in the
back, wrap the next stitch (two wraps on this one now) and turn.
Row 2: Purl 11, lift back of wrap (RS) onto needle and purl it together with the same stitch, wrap the next
stitch (two wraps on this one now) and turn.
Row 3: Knit 12, lift the front of both wraps onto the needle, knit both wraps together with the same stitch
in the back as before, wrap the next stitch, and turn.
Row 4: Purl 13, lift the back of both wraps onto the needle, purl both wraps together with the same stitch
as before, wrap the next stitch, and turn.
Continue in the manner above until both end stitches are double-wrapped and you have turned to the RS,
ready to knit.
Resume rounds: K 30, knit the wraps together along with the last stitch on needle one, DO NOT TURN but
continue knitting across second needle, pick up the wraps and knit them together with the first stitch on
needle three, k to end of needle three.
GUSSET DECREASES:
Needle 1: Knit 15, slip last stitch on needle one forward on to needle two.
Needle 2: SSK, k across to last st, slip first st from needle three back to needle two, k2tog.
Needle 3: K across.
Next round: knit around even
Decrease round: Needle 1: knit. Needle 2: SSK, k across to last 2 sts, k2tog. Needle 3: knit.
Repeat the even and the decrease rounds until there are 64 stitches total (15 on each of needles 1 and 3, and
34 on needle 2).
CUFF:
Continue in stockinette stitch until sock measures about 6 ½ inches from base of heel, or desired length.
Switch to k1 p1 ribbing and continue for another 1 ½ inches. Bind off loosely.
