DOUBLE BRIOCHE DISHCLOTH WITH VARIATION
By Sara Baldwin ©2009
This dishcloth/washcloth is based on Barbara Walker’s Double Brioche stitch, one of my favorites. It is a little tricky
to learn, but once the pattern becomes familiar you can fall into a great rhythm. One of my children even set the
fundamental “YO S K2TOG” to the tune of “One little two little three little Indians” to remember it better! Some
knitters may find it a little weird to make YO’s at the beginning of a row, so I’ve tried to guide you through it with a lot
of words.
SIZE: About 8 inches wide.
MATERIALS:
One #4 circular or double pointed knitting needle.
Two colors of worsted weight cotton: A for background or main color, B for foreground or contrast color.
With color A cast on 30 stitches (or any even number). Don’t turn your work, but slide it to the other end of your
circular needle and begin again with color B.
Prep row (do this only once): Insert the right hand needle (RHN) into the first stitch on the left hand needle (LHN)
as if to purl (aitp), slip (S) the stitch to the RHN. Holding the end of yarn B in front, wrap B to the back around the
RHN, and return it to the front between the needles- this makes a yarn over (YO). Purl the next stitch (P1). Repeat
this sequence again to the end of the row- *S YO P1* Now you will have 45 stitches, counting the YO’s (Note: the
YO at the beginning of the row may have fallen off, since it is not attached. You may prefer to rewrap it, and then
knot the yarn tails together). TURN
WS = wrong side RS = right side
(WS) Row 1 with A: *P1, slip the slanted YO from the previous row to the RHN as if to purl (aitp) with the yarn in
front (wyif), P1*. Repeat between the * to the end of the row. (Be sure to capture that last YO). SLIDE
(WS) Row 2 with B: With the yarn in front (yf), wrap the RHN from front to back like you did in the prep row (YO
made), S1 aitp with yarn in back (wyib), knit 2 together (K2TOG). *YO S1 K2TOG* TURN
(RS) Row 3 with A: *K2, S1 aitp wyib* SLIDE
(RS) Row 4 with B: Wyif insert the RHN into the stitch on the LHN aitp, slip the stitch to the RHN, wrap the yarn
around the RHN from front to back and bring it forward again between the needles, purl 2 together. *S1 YO
P2TOG* TURN
Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern.
Keep repeating Rows 1 to 4 until your dishcloth is square, and you have just completed Row 2. Next row: *K1,
k2tog, bind off 1*
For the variation shown in the picture on the right, in Row 1 only, slip the previous YO (wyif) as if to knit, which will
give it a twist. Isn’t it amazing how different it looks?!
